Clonakilty Senior Ladies continued their preparation for the upcoming Senior B championship with a very good challenge match against Cork U 16 ladies played in Ahamilla on Saturday Aug 2nd. This match was played in three 20 minute periods and gave the opportunity to have a look at some of the young players as well as the more established players. For the record Cork won the first period 1-05 to 0-01, Clon won the second period 2-03 to 1-02 and Cork won the third period 1-06 to 0-04. Panel: Martina O’Brien, Aoife O’Neill, Carol-Anne O’Donovan, Susie Forristal, Niamh Deasy, Sinead O’Neill, Louise Collins (0-01), Claire O’Leary, Beulah McManus (0-03), Ciara Ryan (0-02), Jenny Quinn, Rosemary Dullea, Maura O’Brien (0-01), Ciara McCarthy, Hollie O’Sullivan, Aine O’Leary (2-01), Aoife Barry, Rebecca O’Sullivan, Orla Deasy Dunne.
Clonakilty Senior Ladies continued their Senior Football Championship campaign on Tuesday 22nd with a much improved display away to Eire Og. Ciara Ryan scored the first of her 2 goals inside the first few minutes and this settled Clon who proceeded to give a fine display of football on the night. Although Eire Og came back to take the lead in the first half, Clon rallied again with points from Anna O’Hea, Maura O’Brien and Caroline Dullea to go in level at the break on a scoreline of Clon 2-06 Eire Og 1-09. Scores were harder to come by in the second half and with 8 minutes remaining the teams were still level 2-09 to 1-12. However Eire Og finished the stronger with 3 points on the trot and a goal with virtually the last kick of the game to leave the final score Eire Og 2-15 Clon 2-09. Again the Clon backs were outstanding on the night with Carol-Anne O’Donovan and Niamh Deasy doing a great marking job on the talented Eimear Scally. Beulah McManus and Aine O’Leary worked hard in midfield while the half forward line of Rosemary Dullea, Jenny Quinn and Ciara Ryan put in a great hour’s work from an attacking and a defensive perspective. Panel: Martina O’Brien, Susie Forristal, Carol-Anne O’Donovan, Rebecca McAree, Niamh Deasy, Sinead O’Neill, Aileen McCarthy, Aine O’Leary (0-01), Beulah McManus (0-01), Ciara Ryan (2-03), Jenny Quinn (0-01), Rosemary Dullea, Maura O’Brien (0-01) free, Anna O’Hea (0-01), Caroline Dullea (0-01), Louise Collins, Lydia Kenny, Aoife Barry, Ellen Hayes, Hollie O’Sullivan, Orla Deasy Dunne, Leanne Calnan.
Clonakilty Senior ladies began their Senior Football Championship on Tuesday 15th with a disappointing defeat to St Mary’s. This match was played in Macroom and was always going to be a tough assignment as St Mary’s (an amalgamation of teams) boasted Cork Inter County stars Geraldine O’Flynn, Deirdre O’Reilly, Brid Stack, former Cork player Norita Kelly and a number of younger players who have worn the Cork jersey at different levels. Clon began brightly but despite an early point from Ciara McCarthy, they trailed 0-04 to 0-01 after 10 minutes. Clon’s backs were extremely brave but were unable to stem the flow of the extra player coming through from outfield. 2 goals from St Mary’s with Clon scoring 3 points in reply left Clon 6 points behind and another goal before half time left the half time score St Mary’s 3-07 Clon 0-04. Clon faced a huge task in the second half but again started brightly with a point from Maura O’Brien. Due to the tenacity of the backs they limited St Mary’s to one point until mid way through the second half. But the constant pressure told and inspired by Geraldine O’Flynn, St Mary’s ran out winners on a scoreline of 5-12 to 0-08. It was obvious that Clon’s preparation wasn’t at the level it might have been. Nevertheless there were solid displays from Martina O’Brien, Susie Forristal, Carol-Anne O’Donovan, Sinead O’Neill, Ciara Ryan and Ciara McCarthy. Clon meet Eire Og next week in the next round robin championship game. Panel: Martina O’Brien, Susie Forristal, Carol-Anne O’Donovan, Rebecca McAree, Niamh Deasy, Sinead O’Neill, Aileen McCarthy, Aine O’Leary (0-01) free, Beulah McManus, Ciara Ryan (0-01), Jenny Quinn (0-01), Rosemary Dullea, Maura O’Brien (0-03) 0-01 free, Ciara McCarthy (0-01), Anna O’Hea (0-01), Louise Collins, Aoife Barry, Caroline Dullea, Lydia Kenny, Ellen Hayes, Hollie O’Sullivan, Orla Deasy Dunne, Rebecca O’Sullivan, Katie O’Connor, Leanne Calnan.
This was a thoroughly entertaining, heart stopping, hard fought win by the Clon girls against a fine Ilen Rovers side. Both teams tore into this game played in near perfect conditions in Ahamila. After a busy period of games and exams, the warm sun and firm ground meant for thirsty work - particularly given the amount of hard work being gone through. A wholly sporting contest, there was rarely more than a few scores between the sides until late in the day when Clon managed to pull ahead. However, they needed every advantage as Rovers stormed back with some fine scores only for Clon to prevail, in the end, by a single point. The first half was very even throughout with some fine scores from both sides but some misses also. The half time score of 3-4 to 3-5 to the girls from the west was a reasonably fair reflection of the contest to that point. Eve Murphy did very well in goal both as a shot stopper and distributing from kickouts. The Clon back line, again led by Tess Kelly and Tommie Shanley contested well with fine support from Eimear Walsh and Abby Wycherly. Maeve McCarthy linked well with Aoife White, in particular and with Maeve O'Don0ovan and Chloe Allman constantly busy, the Rovers defence had their hands full. Laura O'Donovan and Aoife Minihan contributed gamely in support and Aine Downey showed well for the ball in support of Kelsey O'Mahony who was getting on top in her personal battle.
In the U16 league Clonakilty ladies played Clan Na Gael on May 12th in Ahamilla. After a highly entertaining game that displayed all that is good about ladies football, Clonakilty came away narrow winners on a scoreline of 4 – 11 to 5 – 07. There were excellent displays all over the field with Eabha Walsh in goal giving an super display of goalkeeping. She was well supported in defence by Sue Downey, Katie O`Connor, Meabh Deasy & Nicole Falvey. Our midfield of Holly O`Sullivan & Rebecca Early worked tirelessly with Holly scoring some great points from long range. As the scoreline suggests our forwards were on top form with Orla Lowney, Leanne Callnan and Lauren S O`Sullivan leading the way. With time almost up and Clonakilty two points in arrears a superb team move was started by Eabha Walsh in goal and finished by Ciara Ryan to the back of the net.
The club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Cork Senior Ladies Football Team & Management on winning the All Ireland League on Saturday last when they defeated Dublin in a very close encounter. We would especially like to mention our own Martina O'Brien and Aine O'Leary, well done girls and here's to yet another very successful season for the senior ladies. Very quiet on the playing field at the moment due to exams taking place or those preparing for the state exams. Keep up the hard work girls, only a few weeks to go and it will all be worth it in the end.
Ladies Football Update: 05/05/2014
All teams are now up and running and training very hard for what will hopefully be a very successful season for the Club. The Senior Ladies have completed their league campaign and are awaiting Championship Fixtures for the season ahead. The U14 girls are the only other team in competitive action so far this year. Most other competitive action is on hold due to exams both at Secondary School and University Level. The May Bank Holiday disco was a big success and was enjoyed by all who attended. Our congratulations and best wishes go to Martina O’Brien, Aine O’Leary, Beulah McManus and Ciara Ryan who are again playing their part both at County and University level. Ciara Ryan played with the Cork U16’s recently when they defeated Waterford in the Munster Final on a scoreline of 1.15 to 1.14 and best of luck to Martina O’Brien, Aine O’Leary and their team mates in the forthcoming National League Final against Dublin on May 10th.
Clonakilty Senior Ladies collected their first win of the season with a comfortable victory against a young Donoughmore side on Friday April 11th in Ahamilla. Clon started brightly and a goal from Maura O’Brien gave Clon an early lead and despite a number of wides they tacked on points from Claire O’Leary, Ciara Ryan and Lydia Kenny to lead at half time 1-08 to 0-03. Clon’s backs were well on top epitomised by outstanding performances by Niamh Deasy and Rebecca McAree. A goal from Aine O’Leary early in the second half killed the game as a contest. With Louise Collins being the focal point of the attack Clon added on points from Jenny Quinn and a cracker from Ellen Hayes which left the final score Clon 2-13 Donoughmore 0-05. Team: Anna O’Hea, Aoife O’Neill, Carol Ann O’Donovan (Capt), Rebecca McAree, Niamh Deasy, Sinead O’Neill, Aileen McCarthy, Claire O’Leary (0-01), Lydia Kenny (0-02), Jenny Quinn (0-02), Aine O’Leary (1-05) 0-02 frees, Ciara Ryan (0-01), Maura O’Brien (1-01), Louise Collins, Ellen Hayes (0-01).
Clon Senior Ladies continued their league campaign when they entertained reigning county champions St Val’s in Ahamilla on Saturday 22ndMarch. Clon played with the strong wind in the first half and more than held their own against a very useful Val’s outfit. Again Martina O’Brien showed her class in goal while the backs as a unit were outstanding, epitomised by captain Carol Ann O’Donovan and Jenny Quinn who caused a lot of problems for the St Val’s defence when moved to the forward line in the second half. A fine goal taken with aplomb by Anna O’Hea and a nice point by young Ciara Ryan left the half time score... Val’s 1-06 Clon 1-03. Clon were under pressure for a lot of the second half but never left the heads drop. This was an encouraging performance by Clon and bodes well for the future. Final Score: St Val’s 1-15 Clon 1-04. Panel: Martina O’Brien, Aoife O’Neill, Jenny Quinn (0-01), Rebecca McAree, Niamh Deasy, Sinead O’Neill, Susie Forristal, Claire O’Leary, Lydia Kenny (0-01), Louise Collins, Juanita Brennan (0-01, free), Rosemary Dullea, Maura O’Brien, Anna O’Hea (1-00), Caroline Dullea, Aileen McCarthy, Ciara Ryan (0-01), Carol Ann O’Donovan, Aine O’Leary, Ellen Hayes.
Clonakilty Senior Ladies travelled to Mourneabbey on Friday March 14th to take on the locals in the first league game of the season. Clon played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and despite a lack of serious pre season training put in a fine performance on the night. Some fine free taking by Juanita Brennan and a cracking goal from Jenny Quinn had Clon 2 points ahead coming up to half time. But a Mourneabbey goal just before the break had Clon trailing 1-06 to 1-05 at the short whistle. Special mention to the 6 Clon backs who formed a very tight unit especially in the first half and of course Cork goalkeeper Martina O’Brien who pulled off some fine saves throughout the match. Clon battled very well in the second half thanks to the hard working Beulah McManus and Aine O’Leary. Points from Beulah McManus, Maura O’Brien and Grace McManus meant Clon trailed by only 5 points 2-11 to 1-09 with 9 minutes remaining. But they tired late on and with no substitutes to bring on, eventually lost on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-09. Team: Martina O’Brien, Aoife O’Neill, Carol Ann O’Donovan, Rebecca McAree, Niamh Deasy, Sinead O’Neill, Susie Forristal, Claire O’Leary, Beulah McManus (0-01), Louise Collins, Aine O’Leary, Juanita Brennan (0-04) 0-02 frees, Maura O’Brien (0-01), Jenny Quinn (1-02), Grace McManus (0-01). Next Senior Fixture: Clon V St Val’s in Ahamilla on (Saturday 22nd March) @ 5.00 p.m.

Clon Senior ladies continued their preparation recently for the upcoming championship with a challenge match against Valley Rovers in Ahamilla. This was a good workout for the girls and despite some rustiness Clon led 1-06 to 0-2 at half time. 2 goals from Anna O’Hea early in the second half put Clon in control but Valleys battled well to leave the final score: Clon 3-12 Valleys 2-07. Clon Junior ladies got their championship campaign off to a great start on Tuesday 30th July in Ahamilla with victory over Muinter Bhaire. This was a step into the unknown for this Clon team because of its reliance on a number of younger players but nobody need have worried as the team performance was top drawer. Clon led 1-07 to 0-05 at the break thanks to some outstanding defending by the backs and some fine scores at the other end, the pick of which were points from Leanne Calnan and Ciara McCarthy. An early second half goal from Hollie Hayes set up by Maura O’Brien followed by another by U14 star Ciara Ryan put Clon in control but Muinter Bhaire never gave up and scored 2 goals of their own to stay in touch. A fourth goal from Rosemarie Dullea put the icing on the cake with Mary Jo Williams saving a Muinter Bhaire penalty with the last kick of the game. Final score : Clon 4-08 Muinter Bhaire 2-06. In a magnificent team performance, special mention to the tenacious Jennifer White at corner back in a backline where Aoife O’Neill and Louise Collins were dominant. Lydia Kenny and Ciara McCarthy put in a good hours work in midfield and the forwards worked superbly as a unit and took some great scores. Panel: Mary Jo Williams, Laura Ryan, Aoife O’Neill, Jennifer White, Aileen McCarthy, Louise Collins, Ellen Hayes, Lydia Kenny, Ciara McCarthy (0-01), Hollie Hayes (2-02), Rosemarie Dullea (1-00), Hollie O’Sullivan, Leanne Calnan (0-01), Maura O’Brien (0-01), Ciara Ryan (1-03), Rebecca McAree, Maeve Cowhig, Denise Palmer, Beibhinn Crowley.

On 19th May Cork U14 girls won the All Ireland A blitz in Mullingar and on the 26th May they won the U14 Munster A Final. On both occasions they overame Kerry and on both occasions Ciara played a starring role at centre back, well done to Ciara and her team mates. Ladies Football Update 29/04/2013
All teams are now training and in action in various West Cork and County Leagues. The senior & junior ladies have been very slow to get going due to weather and availability of players from all teams. Meanwhile the Clon girls continue to shine on the inter-county scene. On Saturday next, the 4th May the Cork Minors will take on Kerry in the Munster Final in Ahamilla @ 2 o’clock - Clon will be represented on this team by the very capable Jenny Quinn.
