U13 GIRLS WIN WEST CORK FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Pride of place goes to the Clonakilty U-13 girls footballers who won the West Cork U13b final in great style defeating a valiant St Colums team by 5-4 to 3-5. Both teams had met in an earlier round of the competition finishing in a draw on that occasion. Clonakilty knew they were in for a challenge and the game turned out exactly that.  While there were many brilliant individual displays from Clonakilty players, this victory was based on a solid team performance encompassing all that is good in Ladies Gaelic football – skill, commitment and confidence in the players own ability. A huge effort was made by the girls in the lead up to this final and it was evident from this display that the girls embraced the style of play the mentors had wished them to play.  From the very start, the game ebbed and flowed being played at a ferocious pace by both sides. Clonakilty went in at half time 2 points down. The girls decided that they were not going to go home empty handed and from the restart set down a marker to St Colums and turned the 2 point deficit to a lead that they would not relinquish. The Clonakilty backs put their bodies on the line and some vital saves by goalie Eve Murphy kept a brave St Colums team to just 2 scores in the second half.  When the final whistle blew the Clonakilty girls celebrated but showed respect to the St Colums players who were likewise gracious in defeat. On return to Clonakilty, the girls paraded the cup through the town. These girls are the future of the Clonakilty Ladies Football Club and it was only right and proper that the girls were treated to food and refreshments for their efforts on the day and throughout the year. This was greatly appreciated by the girls who are now on a well deserved break, having brought the first piece of silverware to the Clonakilty Ladies Club this year.  Team: Eve Murphy, Aoife Moloney, Ellen Lawlor, Eimear Walsh, Ciara Deasy, Tess Kelly, Laura O’Donovan, Abby Wycherley, Meabh O’Donovan, Chloe Allman, Kiya O’Mahony, Ailbhe Dunlea, Sinead O’Grady, Kelsey O’Mahony, Leah McAree (Capt).  Sophie Sheehan, Grace Lawlor, Aine Downey,Aeisha Hurley.  Team Mentors: John O’Grady, John Minihan, Mary Collins, Margo Harte, Finbar O’Mahony, Claire Hurley
