On Saturday, May 11th a very successful under 16 Invitation Football tournament, generously sponsored by Walsh's Supermarket, Pearse Street, Clonakilty was run off in Ahamilla as part of the celebration of the club's 125th year in existence. Eight teams took part and they were divided into two groups of four teams each, giving a minmum of three games to each team. It was 17 minutes a half and the format proved very successful. Clon created a major shock in the very first game by defeating hot favourites, Douglas, always a force at this level. In their next game they beat Nemo Rangers and then played a titanic battle with Bantry, eventually staging a great comeback to win by a single point. In the meantime, Carrigaline and St. Finbarrs emerged from the other half, with Glanmite and Ahan Gaels being eliminated. The semi-final saw Clon lose out by the minmun marging to Carrigaline while Douglas got the better of St. Finbarrs. Douglas then defeated Carrigaline in the final. Overall, it was a trmendous day's football and great praise goes to James O Donovan and all of the volunteers who helped him in running off the competition so well. Thanks also to Walsh's Supermarket for the generous sponsorship.
